The Reviews

Review by: Paul Clark
Personal Rating: 8/10

I bought this scanner because I was asked by an exam board to scan scripts for other examiners to look at. I looked first at a very cheap scanner and then looked at a range of reviews from several sites. They were all very complimentary. I was staggered when it arrived by its weight - its like carrying paper - really featherlight. I was rather worried that it might not be robust as a result, but to date I have not managed to do anything too damaging. It looks quite smart and very thin. You could easily put it on top of your resident printer without any fear of it getting in the way.

The scanner was very simple to set up and it came with a range of software including ArcSoft PhotoStudio, ScanSoft OmniPage SE and Presto! PageManager. Personally I find that using Presto is the easiest for text - it has both PDF and OCR options. What I was really surprised by is the remarkable quality of the images and the ease of use. OK its not wildly quick, but for the occasional use I put it to it is more than suitable and the quality compensates for the slow speed ... and then there is the price - wow!. Even when scanning marking corrections using red pen, the amendments were really clear.

There is one possible drawback which would need checking. I am not sure that it can be used with Vista. I loaded it onto my XP machine, but because I lost the original disk, I have not tried to put it on my latest Dell with Vista. I suggest you check this carefully, before purchase. Apart from that this is a superb, high quality, first scanner buy - I really recommend it for the occasional user - not probably so great for heavy use.
